Haiku Apartments: A Rooftop Wellness Retreat Above Melbourne
Location: South Yarra
Project Type: Commercial
Builder: Hickory
Photographer: Michael Kai

High above Melbourne, the rooftop spa at Haiku Apartments transforms an elevated residential space into a sophisticated wellness retreat.
Designed as both a place to unwind and a striking architectural feature, the circular spa sits seamlessly within the rooftop environment, surrounded by dining and lounge areas and panoramic views across the city.
Designed for Life Above the City
The spa’s distinctive circular form was central to the design, creating a softer architectural element within the rooftop setting while making clever use of the available space.
Generous integrated seating allows multiple residents to enjoy the spa comfortably, while curved entry steps provide easy access and complement the overall form. The result is a space that feels open, inviting and inherently social without losing the sense of calm expected from a private wellness retreat.
Every element has been carefully considered to ensure the spa feels like a natural extension of the surrounding architecture rather than a standalone addition.

Beauty Meets Performance
Creating a commercial spa within a residential development requires more than beautiful design.
As a high-use shared amenity, the spa needed to deliver reliable day-to-day performance while remaining simple to operate and maintain. Water quality, heating and monitoring systems have been designed to work efficiently behind the scenes, allowing residents to simply enjoy the space.
Safety and accessibility were equally important, with clear sightlines, considered water depths and integrated safety measures incorporated throughout the design.
Materials and finishes were also selected with the rooftop environment in mind, balancing a refined aesthetic with the durability required to withstand regular use and exposure to Melbourne’s changing weather conditions.

A Sanctuary in the Sky
Positioned alongside the rooftop dining and lounge spaces, the spa becomes more than a place for relaxation. It forms part of the broader rooftop experience — a social focal point, a wellness destination and a quiet escape above the city.
The finished project brings together architecture, functionality and lifestyle to create a timeless residential amenity that enhances both the experience of living at The Yarra and the long-term value of the development.
For Aloha Pools, the project is another example of how thoughtful aquatic design can transform an architectural space — even several storeys above the ground.
